1. NITTY-GRITTY REASONS by Jim Rohn (excerpted from the book Seven Strategies for Wealth and Happiness)

Wouldn't it be wonderful to be motivated to achievement by such a lofty goal as benevolence? I must confess, however, that in the early years of my struggle to succeed, my motivation was a lot more down-to-earth. My reason for succeeding was more basic. In fact, it fell into the category of what I like to call "nitty-gritty reasons." A nitty-gritty reason is the kind that any one of us can have -- at any time, on any day -- and it can cause our lives to change. Let me tell you what happened to me . . .

Shortly before I met Mr. Shoaff, I was lounging at home one day when I heard a knock at the door. It was a timid, hesitant knock. When I opened the door I looked down to see a pair of big brown eyes staring up at me. There stood a frail little girl of about ten. She told me, with all the courage and determination her little heart could muster, that she was selling Girl Scout cookies. It was a masterful presentation -- several flavors, a special deal, and only two dollars per box. How could anyone refuse? Finally, with a big smile and ever-so politely, she asked me to buy. And I wanted to. Oh, how I wanted to!

Except for one thing. I didn't have two dollars! Boy, was I embarrassed! Here I was -- a father, had been to college, was gainfully employed -- and yet I didn't have two dollars to my name.

Naturally I couldn't tell this to the little girl with the big brown eyes. So I did the next best thing. I lied to her. I said, "Thanks, but I've already bought Girl Scout cookies this year. And I've still got plenty stacked in the house."

Now that simply wasn't true. But it was the only thing I could think of to get me off the hook. And it did. The little girl said, "That's okay, sir. Thank you very much." And with that she turned around and went on her way.

I stared after her for what seemed like a very long time. Finally, I closed the door behind me and, leaning my back to it, cried out, "I don't want to live like this anymore. I've had it with being broke, and I've had it with lying. I'll never be embarrassed again by not having any money in my pocket." That day I promised myself to earn enough to always have several hundred dollars in my pocket at all times.

This is what I mean by a nitty-gritty reason. It may not win me any prize for greatness, but it was enough to have a permanent effect on the rest of my life.

My Girl-Scout-cookie story does have a happy ending. Several years later, as I was walking out of my bank where I had just made a hefty deposit and was crossing the street to get into my car, I saw two little girls who were selling candy for some girls' organization. One of them approached me, saying, "Mister, would you like to buy some candy?"

"I probably would," I said playfully. "What kind of candy do you have?" "It's almond roca." "Almond roca. That's my favorite. How much is it?" "It's only two dollars." Two dollars. It couldn't be! I was excited. "How many boxes of candy have you got?" "I've got five."

Looking at her friend, I said, "And how many boxes do you have left?"

"I've got four." "That's nine. Okay, I'll take them all."

At this, both girls' mouths fell open as they exclaimed in unison, "Really?"

"Sure," I said. "I've got some friends that I'll pass some around to."

Excitedly, they scurried to stack all the boxes together. I reached into my pocket and gave them eighteen dollars. As I was about to leave, the boxes tucked under my arm, one of the girls looked up and said, "Mister, you're really something!" How about that! Can you imagine spending only eighteen dollars and having someone look you in the face and say, "You're really something!"

Now you know why I always carry a few hundred dollars on me. I'm not about to miss chances like that ever again.

And to think it all resulted from my own embarrassment, that when properly channeled, acted as a powerful motivator to help me achieve.

3. REQUEST FOR YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL STORIES.

Hello, I'm Kyle Wilson, the president of Jim Rohn International and the publisher of The Jim Rohn Weekly E-zine. We have a special request to make. A few years ago my co-authors, along with Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield and myself started a project that was part of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, called Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneurial Soul. The purpose of the book was to share inspirational stories by, who Hattie Bryant calls, America's Forgotten Hero's, the entrepreneur and small business owner.

Fast forward to today and Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneurial Soul is almost complete. But, I did say almost, not already. Although we have many tremendous stories from world renowned entrepreneurs, we are still short about 10 "killer" stories of our final goal.

Here is a great opportunity for you to help us finish. Now we can't make any promises, your story would have to be graded a 10 plus or a "killer" story to make it. "Killer" stories are personal and passionate accounts of how specific experiences and people have helped shape the person you are today and how it relates to you as an entrepreneur. Specifically for Entrepreneurial Soul, we want our last few stories to reflect the powerful, universal principles of unyielding faith, determination and perseverance and how these foundations enabled you to overcome obstacles - whether educational, emotional or physical reasons. We want stories that go beyond the financial aspect of your business and get to the heart of who you are. Stories that are sometimes emotional, sometimes humorous and always true. In short, they must be entertaining and have both entrepreneurial and Chicken Soup qualities of touching the reader's heart and soul and/or giving them inspiration.

The story qualifications are as follows: Maximum of 1,500 words, typed and double-spaced. Also, please attach a short biography at the end of the story. Floyd Was Damaging . . . Termites Are Even More Damaging

Hurricanes get an awful lot of publicity and in the case of Floyd, the monetary loss was enormous and the loss of life, including livestock, pets and wild animals was certainly tragic. However, from a financial perspective, though they don't really get much publicity, termites actually do more financial damage, and termites are so small the naked eye cannot see the bite one takes out of the structure. But there are so many of those little guys and they take so many bites that the damage is enormous.

The message I communicate is that radical things can happen in minute steps, and I speak now of positive changes.

Personal example:

By losing one and nine-tenths ounces per day (that's not much!) on average every day for ten months, I lost 37 pounds 27 years ago, and the weight is still gone. Those of you who have a weight problem probably said to yourselves, "You know, I could do that!" Hope was born, and action will probably follow.

Beautiful marriages are built not by a magnificent wedding, an incredible honeymoon, beautiful anniversary remembrances and gifts along the way. Those certainly are important to some people. However, it's the little kindnesses and courtesies exchanged on a daily basis that enable marriages to become not only permanent but loving as well.

Daily expressions of love and affection, sincere compliments to your mate about your love and appreciation for him or her, lots of intimacy on a regular basis, including hand-holding, gentle touching, hugging, courtesies like opening the car door or doing something special for your mate, something that is small that is regularly repeated, will make a difference. In particular, lots of hugging when all the husband has on his mind is the hug.

You raise positive kids in a negative world in the same manner. The little things assuring them regularly of your unconditional love, starting their day with love and affection and ending their day the same way can make a lot of difference in their lives and build a permanent relationship that will grow through the years.

In the business world, arriving a few minutes early with a great attitude will make a huge difference in your career. In the sales world, dropping that promised note in the mail, returning the phone call when promised, delivering the service you assured, and becoming genuinely interested in the welfare of the client is what builds a stable career. Then throw in something that's not little, but is not really time-consuming at all. Make certain you're selling, serving and performing with integrity. Those are the little big things or are they big little things? that will make a huge difference In your life.
