1. THE NEW MILLENNIUM AND YOU by Jim Rohn (part one of a
five part series)
As I travel around the country lecturing, one of the most
frequently asked questions is what do I expect to happen
over the next 6-12 months with y2k and the beginning of not
only a new century, but a new millennium? What should people
do? Will all the rules change? Well, I'm no expert, but I
can share with you my thoughts. Whether it is preparing for
a new year, a decade or even a millennium, I still believe
there are overriding principals that we should follow and be
led by. So with such an emphasis on Jan. 1, 2000 and beyond,
I'd like to devote the next few weeks to my view of the
period of history we're in now and how it relates to words I
wrote over 20 years ago in my book "The Seasons Of Life".
Forgive me in advance if I sound a bit philosophical, but as
you know by now, I do believe your philosophy is critical to
your life's success.
First, let me say that life is about constant,
predictable patterns of change. For the six thousand years
of recorded history, as humans have entered this world,
received parental instruction, classroom instruction, and
gathered the experience of life; many have set for
themselves ambitious goals, and dreamed lofty dreams. As the
wheel of life continues its constant turning, all human
emotions appear, disappear, and appear once again.
As we approach this new millennium, for all of us, the
only constant factor in life is our feelings and attitudes
toward life. A major challenge faced by us all is that we
must learn to experience the changing of life's cycles
without being changed by them; to make a constant and
conscious effort to improve ourselves in the face of
changing circumstances.
That is why I believe in the power and value of attitude.
As I read, ponder and speculate about people, their deeds
and their destiny, I become more deeply convinced that it is
our natural destiny to grow, to succeed, to prosper, and to
find happiness while we are here. But, it does take effort
to continue when our results, as well as our friends, tell
us to give up trying. It does not, however, take effort to
fail. It requires little more than a slowly deteriorating
attitude about our present, our future, and about ourselves.
It is ironic that one of the few things in this life that we
have total control over is our own attitudes, and yet most
of us live our entire life behaving as though we had no
control whatsoever.
By our attitude, we decide to read, or not to read. By
our attitude, we decide to try or give up. By our attitude,
we blame ourselves for our failure, or we blame others. Our
attitude determines whether we tell the truth or lie, act or
procrastinate, advance or recede, and by our own attitude we
and we alone actually decide whether to succeed or fail.
How incredibly unique that a God who would create the
complex and immense universe would create the human race and
give to those humans the free choice that would permit them
to select their own achievement or their own destruction.
This strange, but all-knowing God gave to us a delicately
balanced sphere called earth. On it, he placed the
intelligent human who would either develop it or destroy it.
How terribly fascinating that a God would leave both
projects - earth as well as humans - unfinished! Across the
rivers and streams he built no bridges; he left the pictures
unpainted, the songs unsung, the books unwritten, and space
unexplored. For the accomplishment of those things, God
created the unfinished human who, within his heart and mind,
had the capacity to do all these things and more, depending
upon his own choice.
Attitude determines choice, and choice determines
results. All that we are, and all that we can become has
indeed been left unto us. For as long as you continue to
draw breath, you have the chance to complete the work in and
for the earth and for yourself that God has begun for you.
In the cycles and seasons of life, attitude is everything!
(Next week we will begin the four seasons with winter,
the time of preparation, growth and wisdom).

Vitamins for the Mind are a weekly sampling of original
quotes, on a specific topic, taken from The Treasury of
Quotes by Jim Rohn. TTOQ are a collection of over 365 quotes
on 60 topics gathered from Jim's personal journals, seminars
and books spanning over 35 years. This week's topic:
SOWING AND REAPING by Jim Rohn
You must get good at one of two things: sowing in the
spring or begging in the fall.
God has the tough end of the deal. What if instead of
planting the seed you had to make the tree? That would keep
you up late at night, trying to figure that one out.
Plant, don't chant.
One of my good friends always says, "Things don't just
happen; things happen just."
The soil says, "Don't bring me your need, bring me your
seed."
To order or to get more information on the TTOQ by Jim
Rohn, or excerpts from the TTOQ by Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy or

A Message From Zig Ziglar
The following is adapted from Zig's book, Something To
Smile About, published by Thomas Nelson. Look for the book
at your bookstore today!
The word "motivation" is often confused with
manipulation. Motivation occurs when you persuade others to
take an action in their own best interests. Things such as
people preparing their homework, accepting responsibility
for their performance, and finishing their education are the
results of motivation. Manipulation is persuading others to
take an action that is primarily for your benefit. Things
such as selling an inferior product at an inflated price and
working people overtime with no extra pay are examples of
manipulation.
Manipulation self-destructs the individual doing the
manipulating. Word gets out on manipulators, and people grow
less and less likely to respond in a positive manner to
their manipulation. Productivity declines. Leadership occurs
when you persuade a person to take an action that is in your
mutual best interests.
Comparing motivation to manipulation is like comparing
kindness to deceit. The difference is the intent of the
person. Motivation will cause people to act out of free
choice and desire, while manipulation often results in
forced compliance. One is ethical and long lasting; the
other is unethical and temporary.
Leaders and motivators are winners; manipulators are
losers who produce resentment and discord. Become a
motivator, lead your people, and don't manipulate them.

6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Each week we take one or two specific or frequently asked
questions about or addressed to Jim Rohn and provide the
answer! This week, our special guest Zig Ziglar provides the
answer to a frequently asked question we receive in regards
to becoming a professional speaker:
Here is Zig:
Thank you for your interest in information on becoming a
professional speaker. I appreciate your interest and hope my
advice will be helpful to you.
As you may already know, I got my start in pubic speaking
when I began giving sales seminars for the cookware
companies where I was employed. In order to branch out, I
made myself available to every church, school and civic
organization or club within a day's driving distance of my
home. Of course, I had to give away my time and talent for a
number of years, but none of the engagements I accepted went
to waste. You see, with each appearance I was able to
perfect my presentation, to see what did and did not work
with my audiences, and to discover what areas of interest
were prevalent in those communities. I simply accepted any
and every invitation to speak and, of course, each
opportunity gained some exposure and helped to acquire
additional invitations.
I recommend you join a local Toastmasters group and
become a member of the National Speakers Association (1500
South Priest Drive, Tempe, Arizona 85281, 602/968-2552).
There is a Canadian Association of Professional Speakers
with many local branches. If you've not already participated
in a Dale Carnegie Leadership Course, I recommend you do so.
Our own three-day "Born To Win" Seminar is excellent
training for a career in pubic speaking (please see our web
site www.zigziglar.com
You will eventually need to produce a brochure or
pamphlet on yourself. Include testimonials with the names
and addresses or phone numbers of the people contributing
the endorsement. Don't bother to claim to be "Canada's
Number One Speaker," since the number of "number one's" has
already reached astronomic proportions!
When you feel that one of your presentations is about as
good as its going to get, have a reel-to-reel or DAT
recording made of an appearance before an audience. Have the
recording reproduced on cassettes and make them available to
people who show an interest in inviting you to be their
speaker. This is really an invaluable sales tool. Do be sure
the recording is of good quality.
Probably the most important advice I can give is that you
maintain a full-time paid position as you gradually move
into the field of professional speaking and training. The
actual length of time the transition will require differs
with each individual, but we must maintain a healthy
financial responsibility if our speaking career is to be
based on a foundation of integrity.
Now you know what I know. My very best to you in your
endeavors. God bless you and yours in everything. SEE YOU
OVER THE TOP!
