years old, dropped a phrase on me that changed my life forever when he said,
"profits are better than wages.
Wages will make you a living, profits can make you a fortune." You know it is a bit difficult to get rich
on wages, but anybody can get rich on profits. Profits change your whole
attitude, even if you start part-time. Whether it's part-time on your
entrepreneurial business, network marketing company or service business. It can be a landscape
business in the summer or hanging Christmas lights in the winter. It can be
training, consulting or tutoring. It
can be your hobby such as painting, writing, crafts, woodworking, computers or cooking. But once you start investing even part time
effort into your own business, you will find how much more exciting it is to
get up in the morning and go to work on your fortune, even if you're only
spending a few hours a week doing it. How empowering it is to be
able to go to work on your fortune every day rather than going to work to pay
the rent. Now - it is noble to go to
work to pay the rent, but if you could also parcel out part of your time - go
to work to make your fortune. Your whole attitude changes; your spirit
changes. It is in your voice. It is in
your face. It is in your gestures. And
then you can say, "I am now working full-time on my job and part-time on

AND LIFE by Jeffrey Gitomer (Excerpted from the Jim Rohn Two Day Weekend event
- June 22 and 23, 2001) Go milk your own cows first
for new business and referrals. You see you have a choice – you can go to your
neighbor’s cows and milk them or you can milk your own cows, which are full of
milk in the morning, see, but you run out and get in your car and drive right
past your own barn. You go out and try to milk your neighbor’s cow. Now what
happens if you try to milk your neighbor’s cows? They shoot you. That is
correct. That would be the same as a cold call. But your present customers are
your biggest overlooked resource. The next thing I want you to
do is to position yourself in the marketplace. Position yourself as a person of
value by being seen and known in your community. That is the only way you are
going to overcome this obstacle. When I moved to Charlotte, I moved there
during the recession, 12 years ago. You know what I did? I sold while other
people whined. I would go out and sing karaoke and have a good time. The next
day I would go out all happy, knocking on doors, making sales. Making sales.
Make your decisions in tougher times based on the person you want to become not
based on some kind of quota or some kind of monthly quota or nut. Don’t do it
based on the nut that gave you the nut. Make your decisions based on the kind
of person you want to become. That is the best way you can make a long-term
decision. The next rule is work while
others sleep. I wake up in the morning real early. I’m a morning person. It
took me 42 years to figure that out. I thought I was a night person, but most
people who think they are night people are just going out at night getting all
sloshed up and they can’t even get up in the morning. That is the problem, but
everyone is a morning person. I figured that out finally, so get up before
everyone else gets up. I write. I write for an hour everyday. Bet on yourself. If there is
an amount of money you can bet, gamble and bet on yourself. You are the most
valuable person in the world you can bet on. You better get in shape to do it
or you won’t win the race. Jim Rohn made a public
announcement that he is going to better next year than he is this year. What a
way to put yourself in front of the people who love you. He is challenging
himself just the same way he is challenging you to become a better person next
year than you are this year. But he is putting it out there for everybody to
see that he WILL be better. Most people are afraid to put their goals out in
public because if they don’t achieve them, they’re going to look bad. I have a
feeling that Jim Rohn will be better next year than this. Here is my challenge. You
were better at sales when you were four years old. I want you to go back and
retain and regain the tenacity you had at the grocery store with your mother
when you were four years old and you were asking for a candy bar. Somewhere
between that four-year old thing and you getting your business cards printed,
you’ve lost that tenacity. I am challenging you to get it back, along the way.
I want you to ignore nay Sayers, idiots and zealots also known as pukers. And
there is a ton of them. Don’t let those people discourage you. Don’t let them
get in your way. Most of you can identify them real easily. They are the ones
who are drunk on the weekends. Do you want another beer or would you prefer a
huge glass of success. Go for success. People will try to rain on your parade
because they have no parade of their own. Want it bad. I want you to
have the burning desire. If you have the burning desire you will be known as an
achiever. Achievers are hot. How hot are you? Hard work makes up for a lot.
Want to get lucky? Easy. Work your butt off. You will be the luckiest person in
the world, and be aware of and be ready for divine intervention. If you don’t
think you have a guardian angel, think again. I can promise you I have an
ever-present, extremely expensive guardian angel and so do many of you, people
