The Great Challenge of Life by Jim Rohn Here's the great challenge of life - You can have more than you've got because you can become more than you are. I have found that income seldom will exceed your own personal development. Once in a while income takes a lucky jump, but unless you grow out to where it is it will go back to where you are. Somebody once said if you took all the money in the world and divided it among everyone equally, it would soon be back in the same pockets. However, you can have more because you can become more. You see, here is how the other side of the coin reads - unless you change how you are, you will always have what you've got. The marketing plan won't do it. It's a good plan but it won't work without you. You've got to work it. It is the human effort that counts. If you could send a sales manual out to recruit - wouldn't that be lovely? The major thing that makes the difference is what YOU do. In order to have more, you need to become more. The guy says "If I had a good job I would really pour it on, but I have this lousy job so I just goof off." If that is your philosophy you are destined to stay there. Some people say if I had a lot of money I would be really generous, but I don't have much so I'm not generous. See, you've got to change that philosophy or you will never have "the lots of money". Unless YOU change, IT won't change. Amazingly, however, when we throw out our blame list and start becoming more ourselves - the difference is everything else will begin to change around us. It is important to know how to feel, how to respond, and how to let life in so that it can touch you. Civilization is the intelligent management of human emotions. Measure your emotions. Respect for Others by Dr. Tony Alessandra Respect for others goes beyond the Golden Rule. You remember the Golden Rule? Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." It's been around for over 2000 years and still has a solid reputation as a rule to live by. I like to add what I call "The Platinum Rule" which says: "Do unto others as they want to be done unto." The Platinum Rule helps us to avoid the possible conflicts the Golden Rule could unintentionally set up. Let me explain. When you treat others as you want to be treated, you can end up offending others who have different needs, wants and expectations from you. Following the Golden Rule verbatim means treating others from your point of view. That means you naturally tend to speak in the way you are most comfortable listening; or sell the way you like to be sold; or manage the way you like others to direct you. When you treat people as you seek to be treated, it can cause tension. Why? Because the other person may not like your way. That brings us to the second reason the Golden Rule can actually damage relationships. It implies that all people wanted to be treated the same when, in fact, our preferences are not all alike. So the application of this principle varies from one individual to the next based on their personality differences. Respecting others means learning to treat different people differently, according to their needs, not ours. This leads to greater understanding and acceptance all around. The trait of "respect for others" can be narrowly interpreted as "live and let live." That philosophy is giving way to a larger interpretation which breaks down the old "us and them" mentality and leads us to the conclusion that there's only "us." Q: Mr. Rohn, how does one get to be comfortable with the rich and the poor ? Just spend time with them ? A: The key to becoming comfortable with both the rich and the poor is first being comfortable with who you are. If you are comfortable with yourself you will then be able to relate to people based on that, which is what we should all strive for. People are people and regardless of outward circumstances or situations we basically all have and are motivated by similar needs and wants. So as a rule, we should relate to people out of who we are, not necessarily based on who they are or what their circumstances are (obviously there are exceptions to this). If we strive to treat each person with respect, dignity and kindness we will be more able to be comfortable in whatever situation life presents us. Hope this helps! JR
