1. The First Step for Getting Better Results by Jim Rohn

How dramatically we can change our results is largely a function of imagination. In 1960, it was a technological impossibility for man to travel into outer space. For effective communication, use brevity. Jesus said, "Follow me." Now that's brief! He could be brief because of all that he was that he didn't have to say.

You cannot speak that which you do not know. You cannot share that which you do not feel. You cannot translate that which you do not have. And you cannot give that which you do not possess. To give it and to share it, and for it to be effective, you first need to have it. Good communication starts with good preparation.

The goal of effective communication should be for listeners to say, "Me, too!" verses "So what?"

Learn to express, not impress.

Better understated than overstated. Let people be surprised that it was more than you promised and easier than you said.

Be brief on the logic and reason portion of your presentation. There are probably about a thousand facts about an automobile, but you don't need them all to make a decision. About a half dozen will do.

Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.

What is powerful is when what you say is just the tip of the iceberg of what you know.

It's not the matter you cover so much as it is the manner in which you cover it.

3. Make Motivation Last By Zig Ziglar

Is motivation something that gets you excited for the moment and lets you down the next day, or can it endure for a long time?

I see the impact of motivation in people's lives every day. I get many letters and phone calls from people who say motivation has completely changed their lives. Yet other people say that motivation has had little impact on them.

A study at Stanford University has provided the reason for the variance. According to the study, only 5 percent of the people who buy into a concept are able to implement it; the other 95 percent don't have the resources to do so. Those few words created as much excitement in me as any single sentence ever has, because they made something crystal clear: The books and tapes are the resources! That's why I get so many more letters from people who say that my books and tapes have changed their lives than I get from people who say that my speech changed their lives.

The next time you see an author who presents a philosophy or concept that you believe can enrich your life, I encourage you to take the following steps:

1. Check out the author's credentials and see whether he or she can document the results you hear being touted.

2. If the evidence is solid, buy the book or tapes.

Books and tapes give you the resources you need to implement the concepts. When you take those steps, you make certain that the motivation you feel at the moment can survive the day and impact your future over the long haul. People who are concerned about their futures take the necessary steps today in the form of growing, learning, studying, and planning for their futures. This process generates enthusiasm and excitement about their futures, so they take the necessary action to ensure those futures. People who aren't concerned about their futures because they don't think they have futures are the ones who take no action. They drift along, singing the old Doris Day song, "Que Sera, Sera," and they drift into their declining years without any excitement or, in most cases, without any resources to enjoy even the basics of life without depending on others.

It's interesting to note that these two groups of people live at the same time, possibly in the same area, and may work in the same job or profession. It's not the absence of opportunity but the absence of motivation that is the problem for the second group. If you think you have no future, let me suggest that having a future is a matter of choice. If you continue to read books and start setting specific goals, you are doing something about your future. Your excitement (motivation) grows, and from that point on, you can develop the actions that dramatically enrich your future.

A. MW thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your question. We have all heard the phrase "when the student is ready the teacher will appear." I believe there is truth to that. So you are already off to a great start, because it appears you are searching for positive influences in your life.

I was fortunate early on to have Mr. Shoaff as my mentor. But I also had some other very powerful influential mentors as well. People like Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale and James Allen. Although at the time I did not personally know these gentleman, I did know the very best of what they had to share from their books. And this is available to anyone who would take the time to learn from them.

You may remember Greg - you spoke to him in the hall (outside the restroom) for a short time after the breakfast on Saturday. I have to say that it was truly an honor and a pleasure to meet you in person and shake your hand. Herbalife has been an incredible journey for us. We've faced many struggles and challenges along the way (mostly with ourselves). You have an amazing gift, and your years of serving others with your teachings has not only been a great source of information and inspiration to us, but is helping us to grow to become the people we so desire to be. Thank you. I've seen you quite a few times over the last few years at different Herbalife events, but San Antonio was different. You touched my heart. In Jan 9 2001, your weekly subscriber was at 42,618. In Dec 2003, almost two years it is three times that. I have learnt from Jim Rohn and Brian Tracy that success is the little steps we take each day which people don't see nor appreciate. I have completed the one-year success course. Over the last two years, slowly but steadily I have been much affected by the words of Jim Rohn as I watched his videos, listen to his CDs and read his books.
