1. Creating Your
Character is Like an Artist Creating a Sculpture by Jim Rohn

Could creating your character be likened to an artist creating a
sculpture? In my opinion, I believe that character is not something
that just happens by itself, any more than a chisel can create a
work of art without the hand of an artist guiding it. In both
instances, a conscious decision for a specific outcome has been
made. A conscious process is at work. Character is the result of
hundreds and hundreds of choices you make that gradually turn who
you are, at any given moment, into who you want to be. If that
decision-making process is not present, you will still be somebody.
You will still be alive, but may have a personality rather than a
character.
Character is not something you were born with and can't change like
your fingerprint. In fact, because you weren't born with it, it is
something that you must take responsibility for creating. I don't
believe that adversity by itself builds character and I certainly
don't think that success erodes it. Character is built by how you
respond to what happens in your life. Whether it's winning every
game or losing every game. Getting rich or dealing with hard times.
You build character out of certain qualities that you must create
and diligently nurture within yourself. Just like you would plant
and water a seed or gather wood and build a campfire. You've got to
look for those things in your heart and in your gut. You've got to
chisel away in order to find them. Just like chiseling away the rock
in order to create the sculpture that has previously existed only in
your imagination.
But do you want to know the really amazing thing about character? If
you are sincerely committed to making yourself into the person you
want to be, you'll not only create those qualities, but you'll
continually strengthen them. And you will recreate them in abundance
even as you are drawing on them every day of your life. Just like
the burning bush in the biblical book of Exodus, the bush burned but
the flames did not consume it. Character sustains itself and
nurtures itself even as it is being put to work, tested, and
challenged. And once character is formed, it will serve as a solid,
lasting foundation upon which to build the life you desire.

One of the best places to start to turn your life around is
by doing whatever appears on your mental "I should" list.
Indecision is the thief of opportunity.
Every life form seems to strive to its maximum except human beings.
How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it possibly can. Human beings,
on the other hand, have been given the dignity of choice. You can
choose to be all or you can choose to be less. Why not stretch up to
the full measure of the challenge and see what all you can do?
You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change
your direction overnight.
Decision making can sometimes seem like inner civil war.
I used to say, "I sure hope things will change." Then I learned that
the only way things are going to change for me is when I change.
Don't say, "If I could, I would." Say, "If I can, I will."
It doesn't matter which side of the fence you get off on sometimes.
What matters most is getting off! You cannot make progress without
making decisions.
We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or
desperation.
If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree.

3. Achieving Success by Expecting Success by Zig Ziglar
When you plan and prepare carefully, you can legitimately expect
to have success in your efforts. When you recognize and develop the
winning qualities that you were born with, the winner you were born
to be emerges. When you plan and prepare to make a sale, for
example, you can legitimately expect to make a sale. Although not
all your expectations are going to come to pass, you give yourself
an infinitely better chance of succeeding by taking the proper
steps. Regardless of your goal--losing weight, making more sales,
furthering your education, earning a promotion, saving money for a
new home or an exotic vacation--you can expect to achieve your goal
if you plan and prepare for it.
Also understand that the path from where you are to where you want
to be is not always smooth and straight. The reason for the twists
and bumps is simple, and it has nothing to do with you. It has more
to do with the fact that not everyone is as interested in your
success as you are. Some people may accidentally hinder your
efforts; others who are in competition with you and have little or
no integrity may try to sabotage your efforts.
Keep in mind, though, that when you hit those roadblocks your
character, commitment, and attitude are the determining factors in
your success... Carefully review your plan of action, seek wise
counsel, and be particularly careful to feed your mind good
information. An optimistic, positive mind is far more likely to come
up with creative solutions than a mind that dwells on setbacks and
difficulties.
Bottom line: expect success and you can achieve it!
