1. Multiple Skills for the 21st Century by Jim Rohn
I believe that in this 21st Century it is so important to have multiple skills.
But what I also find is that if you are already in sales, network marketing or
have an entrepreneurial business (or plan to in the future); you can gain the
needed skills for the future while you create your income now.
Here's my short list for on the job training, so that you can learn while you
earn.
1) SALES
I began my journey with sales, which of course dynamically changed my life back
at age 25. The first year I multiplied my income by five. I was raised in farm
country. I knew how to milk cows, but it didn't pay well. But sales altered the
course of my life, learning to present a valid product in the marketplace, talk
about its virtues and get somebody to say "yes." And then give them good
service.
2) RECRUITING
Then came recruiting, how to expand my business, build an organization. We have
all heard the question, is it better to have one person selling a $1000 or have
100 people selling $10? If you ask me, I'll take the 100 at $10. Recruiting, the
ability to multiply your efforts, once mastered, is one of life and leadership's
greatest time management resources.
3) ORGANIZING
Then I learned organizing. Keeping your own schedule can be difficult at times,
but now you are having to balance multiple tasks and people to get maximum
results. But you will find that the payoff is massive once you have tapped into
the synergy and momentum of group dynamics and teamwork.
4) PROMOTION
Next is promotion. First it's the spring campaign and then the fall campaign,
and then it's this month's objective's campaign. You never know when it's going
to click for someone to want or need to buy from you or be a part of what you
are doing, so having the offer or the special or the contest going when they're
ready can make all the difference.
5) RECOGNITION
Then it's the recognition. Some people work harder for recognition than they do
for money. It's the chance to belong. Getting people to do something that
ordinarily on their own, they wouldn't think of doing. They could, but they
don't think of it. You come along with a little promotion for this month or this
quarter and everything changes for them, and I found that paid big money.
6) COMMUNICATION
Then I learned communication. How to do the training, how to do the teaching,
and probably the greatest gift of all is learning how to inspire with words.
Inspire people to see themselves better than they are; all of those gifts, all
of those skills. Being the voice that tells them they have made a wise decision
and here's why.
Now, I believe with just this little short list I've given you, you'll be
equipped. We've all watched what has happened the last 15 years. The guy had one
skill - the company downsizes. His division is eliminated and since he only had
one skill, now he is vulnerable. He's wandering around saying, "Oh my, the last
few years I should have taken some classes that would have taught me a couple of
more things and I wouldn't be here in this vulnerable position."
So my admonition -- learn some multiple skills, or should we say, back-up skills
for the 21st Century and no better place to learn them than in what your already
doing now.
To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

2. Vitamins for the Mind by Jim Rohn
Overcoming the Negative
We must all wage an intense, lifelong battle against the constant downward pull.
If we relax, the bugs and weeds of negativity will move into the garden and take
away everything of value.
Humility is a virtue; timidity is a disease.
If you spend five minutes complaining, you have just wasted five minutes. If you
continue complaining, it won’t be long before they haul you out to a financial
desert and there let you choke on the dust of your own regret.
You cannot take the mild approach to the weeds in your mental garden. You have
got to hate weeds enough to kill them. Weeds are not something you handle; weeds
are something you devastate.
Vitamins for the Mind is a weekly sampling of original quotes, on a specific topic, taken from The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn (TTOQ). TTOQ, a beautiful, burgundy hardbound book with gold foil lettering, is a collection of over 365 quotes on 60 topics gathered from Jim's personal journals, seminars and books spanning over 39 years. 3. Stop Just Writing About Your Past and Start Writing Your Future! by Chris Widener (excerpted from Chris Widener's book,
Live the Life You've Always Dreamed Of!)
"The history of free men is never written by chance, but by choice – their
choice." -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Many people spend a lot of time on their history. Some do it purposefully with
such hobbies as journaling, while others simply write and rewrite their history
over and over in their minds. Depending upon the way you go about this, this can
be good or bad. If you are doing it so you can reflect back on your life, that's
good. If you are doing it so you can learn from your past, that's good too.
Unfortunately, many people do it simply as a subconscious act of running
themselves into the ground over and over.
What you "write" in your mind is an act of mental discipline, just as what you
write on a sheet of paper is a discipline. Keep that in mind.
So if this is true, that we can make a choice as to what we want to write, both
literally and figuratively, we have an extraordinary opportunity!
Instead of going over and over our past, we can choose to write our future! Have
you ever thought about writing your future before it even happens to you? Well,
now you can – and you will!
Here is a process that will let you determine and write your own future!
Choose to choose your own future. If you don't make the decision to accept
responsibility for your own future, then you are choosing to not write your
future. You must choose to choose. Do you?
Determine what you want your future to be. Be specific.
What do you want to earn?
Where do you want to live?
What do you want to weigh?
What do you want to do for a living?
What do you want to do in your leisure time?
How much do you want to retire on?
If you don't know the answers to these questions, then you may as well not even
begin to write your future. Take some time to answer them fully.
Get a good understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. If you are going to
write your future, you will have to have a sober understanding of what you are
good at and what you are not particularly good at. Maybe ask a good friend or
your spouse to give you an honest appraisal of your strengths and weaknesses.
Focus on playing to your strengths while ever improving your weaknesses. Be sure
that what you are doing is utilizing your strengths to their fullest. And you
don't want to forget your weaknesses, even while you are trying to stay away
from them. Instead, set smaller goals for improvement in your areas of weakness
while you set grand goals for the areas you are strongest in!
Get out a three pieces of paper. On the top of one, write, "One year from today
I will…" On the next write, "Three years from today I will…" On the last write,
"Ten years from today I will…" Then begin to fill them out. Make commitments to
yourself. As you write them, end each sentence with a transition to how you are
going to do it. For example, you may write, "One year from today I will… Have
$4800 in my saving account by saving $400 per month."
Start putting only information into your mind that will benefit the fulfillment
of the kind of life you are writing about. For example, if you have a hard time
spending money rather than saving it, you should probably cancel all of the
catalogues that come each day that entice you to spend. Instead, spend the time
you would have spent thumbing through catalogues going through financial growth
material instead.
Discipline yourself to spend your time in a manner that will help you get to
your goals. For example, cut out five hours of television a week and spend that
time on your goals instead. That would be a difference of 260 hours in the next
year! Wow! What could you do with another 260 hours? Almost anything!
You do not have to be a paper cup blowing to and fro in the wind! You do not
have to live at the whims of other people or circumstances. You CAN choose your
future! You can write it out just the way you want it to happen! Yes, ups and
downs will come but you will outlast them and eventually arrive at your destiny.
Then, when you get to the end of your life, you will know how it all turns out
because you will have been the author!
Get going – write your own future!

It is challenging to express how grateful I’m for being blessed from listening
to Mr. Rohn about 12 years ago. Mr. Rohn has had a significant positive impact
on all areas of my life. My introduction to Mr. Rohn was when I listened to the
Art of Exceptional Living in 1995. The Art of Exceptional Living was like seeing
a rainbow that was so magnificent that it was difficult for me to describe in
words to myself. Mr. Rohn is the one that truly made me understand that to have
more in any area of my life I must become more. When I first listened to Jim
talk about his old blame list, I realized for the first time in my life (I was
28) that the problem was not it, the challenge and problem was Me. I have most
of Mr. Rohn's books, CD’s, DVD s, and/or cassettes. When something new comes out
like the Jim Rohn Classic Collection, it is another masterpiece that is quickly
added to my library. God Bless all of you at J.R.I. Mr. Rohn, you are a
wonderful person. I will always be sincerely grateful for Mr. Rohn's dedication
to sharing ideas, principles, and fundamentals for improving life. I never met
Mr. Rohn in person but, he has a positive impact on my life everyday since I
first listened to him. I’m looking forward to meeting Mr. Rohn personally at the
end of March in Dallas. So many of your profound examples have made me
understand life in a way that I never did. Your example of what to do with a
dollar increased my financial discipline tremendously. When I first listened to
you say, is it easier to donate a $100,000 out of a million or 10 cents out of a
dollar. That one statement had more of an impact on me then accounting and
economics in college. Shortly, after hearing that, I immediately drafted a plan
to better care for every dollar I earned by labor or investment. I’m doing my
best to keep this as brief as possible but, I’m so grateful, and it is
challenging to say it all in just a couple of sentences. Thank You!

In 1977, I had the good fortune to hear Jim Rohn speak and later worked with him
at Adventures in Achievement. I also spent the weekend at the ranch and worked
on my goals. The exercise was "write down everything you want" with no
restrictions. Then we went over our lists and put a 20 next to everything we
thought we could achieve in 20 years. From there, we reduced the list to 10, 5,
1, six month and immediate goals. I'm a creative person and had several pages of
goals from silly to substantial. I'm very happy to say I had achieved all my
goals within two years, except for two. One of those goals was achieved today,
30 years later: I'm earning more income from writing than working at a
conventional job and receive checks from various publishers quite frequently. As
I recall, the goal was "Live in a beautiful place where I can see the ocean and
go to the mailbox to pick up royalty checks from my writing." That leaves one
more goal to achieve: have a popular musician play and sing my music. The album
is written. Perhaps, as in the catch phrase "If you build it, they will come,"
if I write it, s/he will sing. Thank you for allowing me to express myself and
please let Mr. Rohn know how much his lessons have meant to my personal success.
