1. Skills Make Labor More Valuable by Jim Rohn
As you know by now, if you have been a long time student of my philosophies, I'm a very big proponent of activity, labor and discipline. In fact, I devoted one of the five major pieces to the life puzzle (in my book under the same name) to the subject of activity and labor. But now let me add another key word to the labor equation - skillful. Yes, skillful labor.
We need the skills to help build our family's dreams, the skills to stir up an enterprise and make it successful. We need skills to build equities for the future. We need skills of all kinds.
How about this - skillful language. If you just talk to your family you can hold them all together, but if you skillfully talk to your children you can help them build dreams for the future. That is why I spend so much time at the Weekend Seminar on communication - how to affect others with words. You can't be lazy in language - it cost too much. What if you meant to say "what's troubling you?" and instead you said "what's wrong with you?". Wow, that's too big a mistake. And sure you could have made that mistake 10 years ago, but not now. You should have gotten much better by now in language and communication.
Skills multiply labors by two, by five, by ten, by fifty, by one hundred times. Hey, you can chop a tree down with a hammer but it takes about 30 days, called labor. But if you trade the hammer in for an ax, you can chop the tree down in about 30 minutes. What's the difference in 30 days and 30 minutes? Skills. Skills made the difference.
So do what you can - labor. But also do the best that you can do improved skills. And you will find that the labor combined with skills will start producing miracles. Miracles with your money, miracles with your family and miracles in every part of your life.
To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

2. Vitamins for the Mind by Jim Rohn
IDEAS
If you wish to find, you must search. Rarely does a good idea interrupt you.
Ideas can be life-changing. Sometimes all you need is just one more good idea.
Ideas are information taking shape.
When a new idea comes our way, we must put it on our mental scales and weigh it carefully before deciding its value.
One of the secrets to success is ideas mixed with inspiration.
Nothing is more powerful for your future than being a gatherer of good ideas and information. That's called doing your homework.
Vitamins for the Mind is a weekly sampling of original quotes, on a specific topic, taken from The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn (TTOQ). TTOQ, a beautiful, burgundy hardbound book with gold foil lettering, is a collection of over 365 quotes on 60 topics gathered from Jim's personal journals, seminars and books spanning over 39 years. To order the TTOQ by Jim Rohn or Excerpts from TTOQ by Jim Rohn or Brian Tracy, please go to Jim Rohn's Online Catalog
3. Great Records in Sports! by Kyle Wilson
There are so many…. The Miami Dolphins perfect season, John Wooden and
UCLA's dominant basketball teams, Cal Ripken's remarkable consecutive games
played, Emmett Smith’s rushing record, the Yankees World Series wins and so
on and so on…
Well, I have to share one with you that you probably are not
aware of, 79-1.
Ever since Jim Rohn and I partnered together in 1993, I’ve lived in a small
suburb of Dallas/Ft Worth – Southlake, TX (about 25,000 people). As you may
know, high school football down here is big and something I have grown to
love. Seeing the discipline, hard work and commitment from young students
including the football team, the band, the cheerleaders and the drill team –
it's exemplary!
In fact so much so, that many of our Monday morning JRI meetings would
include comments I would have about the previous Friday night's football
game.
Why? Because I would see so many success principles at work each Friday
night as I watched a group of ordinary kids, playing in the highest
classification (and a public school), in the most competitive football state
in the country, go 79-1 over 5 years, win 4 state championships and be named
3 consecutive years in a row the High School National Champion!
At the beginning of this remarkable run in 2002, I wrote in my journal that
I wanted to interview the head football coach of this team, Todd Dodge
(former quarterback from Univ. of Texas). Little did I know he would go on
to win 79 out of 80 games (the lone loss by 1 point was the 2nd of his 5
consecutive state championship game appearances).
Todd, in December of 2006, got offered a Division 1 coaching job at the
University of North Texas. Upon his arrival and subsequently the vision and
game plan he has instilled, their season tickets by May of 2007 (4 months
before the season opener against Oklahoma) had surpassed all of the previous
seasons' sales, and to date through August of 2007 they are almost 50% over
all of last year's ticket revenues. Plus they had one of their best
recruiting classes in years – all in his first 8 months.
Todd is a visionary, a teacher, a leader and most importantly an incredible
person. His caring and mentoring of his kids is amazing. For Todd it is
ultimately about the kids in his program! Plus he does win!
So for me, 5 years later reaching the goal I had written in my journal in
2002, on July 20, 2007 to interview Todd Dodge for 3½ hours, was not only
exciting but also a huge honor. We touched on a variety of leadership and
sports topics including:
- Instilling a vision and winning attitude
- The opportunity to affect kids the rest of their lives
- Coaching is more than just x's and o's. What makes a good coach?
- Selling the dream
- Objectives, 10 Game Day Expectations and 12 Absolutes
- Advice to leaders, parents, coaches and kids
- Early lessons learned
- Coaching camaraderie
- Teaching character classes
- Coach Dodge's mentors and influences
- SLC Dragon's Recipe for Success (list of 50)
- and much, much more!

Yes, this interview has many Southlake Carroll highlights and conversations
(just like Michael Dell stories and lessons would include many Dell
references). But listen to the great strategies and ideas Coach Dodge
shares – THEY are applicable to everyday life and success.
And by all means if you know anyone who is a coach, a teacher, a business
person or has teenage kids (and they want them to succeed in sports and
life), I highly recommend that you forward this link to them.
In closing, here are just
a few of the hundreds of lessons Todd shares on this 3 hour in-depth
interview:
In life and sports, do not play it safe. Always play to win!
Regardless of criticism or praise, always maintain your confidence and
belief.
Whether coaching a team, running a business, or in your own family, always
carry strong tradition from the past into the future.
When adversity comes, and it surely will, choose not to panic. Instead,
choose to face it head on with confidence.
Insurmountable odds also have the potential to be the defining moments of
your future success.
Part of being a good leader is helping your team grow in their personal
lives and become better all around people.
Trust and honesty is essential. I can't help you if I can't trust you.
You can't start a plan, a team, an organization or a business without
stating what you want to accomplish.
Since the interview, here at JRI, we reference and talk about everyday the
lessons and the concepts Todd shares and strive to reach higher and grow
into our potential.
Again, if you love football, you will love this; but more importantly, if
you own a company, manage others, have high goals and/or want to help your
kids achieve more – this interview will EMPOWER you to do so.

I received both lessons and have saved last's weeks so that I have plenty to do while waiting for flights going and coming. I should be on track when I get back. I really appreciated the One Year Success Plan lessons, they have helped tremendously. Thanks for being diligent about getting these to me. I appreciate it!

This morning I had to reply; this newsletter... that noun does not begin to cover the content of the issue today... is an invaluable piece of writing. I love the format, as it is delightful having completed a piece of serious reading to relax with a quote that has stopped one from scrolling down and overloading the brain. I have a file of quotes on my computer and this is a great source of new material. The subject matter is diverse and rich so there is something for everyone... not just sales, on millionaire making but for life as well. However, all of this is not my greatest accolade. Everybody out there is jamming my day with the work of their 'Friends. All of it costing me more money to access. Nothing sells better to the likes of me than a sample I can touch, or test drive :0) especially when careful selection has been made to associate the gift with the context of the package it is contained in. Truly a gift... not just a voucher for discount on something I do not need. You evoke my interest and free me to choose, or not to at this time. That is why I keep these on file. What I do not react to today I might (often do) need later. So thank you for enriching my life. May I wish you continued success and joy in all you do.

Every time I listen to your trainings and read your blogs, I feel as though you are talking directly to me. I really needed to read the one you just posted "Facing the Enemies Within". I have been learning so much about myself over the last year-more so within the last six months so I recognize all of my internal enemies. I noticed that at the times when I am feeling down the most is when I am dwelling on my mistakes and failures allowing them to torment me internally. Sometimes it feels like a storm and I know that I am the cause of it because I made the decision to allow my thoughts to take over. I have had enough of that! I have an incredible business that I have not been consistent and persistent in growing. I have allowed myself to be knocked down by the brick walls instead of climbing over them or finding a way to knock them down and I realize that has been my biggest mistake ever! There are so many things that I want to do and have and want to become. I realize more and more everyday that my business is the key to unlocking all those wonderful parts of my universe. I just want to thank you again for being one of my "personal mentors". Every time I listen to your trainings, I hear something new; something that I didn't pick up... I would have given up on myself a long time ago if I didn't have your words of wisdom to reflect on.
-- Sabrina Hamm
I had the pleasure of meeting you and attending one of your seminars last Saturday in Wakefield, MA when your luggage and you were separated! I thoroughly enjoyed your seminar and learned a lot. I have several of your tapes I just got at the supervisor workshop in Arizona a few weeks ago. I am enjoying them. I was planning on going again on Sunday for the rest of the Herbalife supervisor training, only my second event. However, my car was having some trouble and I was advised not to drive it back and forth again to the second day. So, I am thrilled that I got to at least one day and that it was your day I got to not the day I missed. I believe that things happen for a reason and I felt so blessed to have spent the time learning from you on my weekend off! Thank you so much ! I hope I get the pleasure to meet you again in person. I will be at a higher level of accomplishment by that time. I am now on my way, Thanks so much!
