1. Walking a New Road by Jim Rohn
Here is a good question to ask yourself. Ten years from now you will surely arrive. The question is, where? We don't want to kid ourselves about where; we don't want to kid ourselves about the road we're walking.
At age 25, I had a day shortly after I met Mr. Shoaff called "do not kid myself anymore" day. I didn't want to be disillusioned anymore. Up until then, I had been using the crossed-finger theory. But after meeting Mr. Shoaff, I finally decided that the crossed-finger theory was not going to get me what I wanted. That it wasn't where the treasure lies. That I was going to have to make sure which way I was headed.
Then, with the help of Mr. Shoaff, I found with a few reading disciplines, and a few disciplines of mind, and a few disciplines of activity, that when exercised, can begin making all the difference in the world as to where you will arrive.
Just a few changes. Sometimes we get the idea that we're doing about 10% and there's about 90% more that we need in order to make the difference for our fortune but probably the opposite is true. We're doing enough things to have bought and shared in the good life so far. And maybe all we need is that extra 5% or 10% of intellectual change. Activity change. A refinement of discipline. A refinement of thought. And all we need is the ideas to make those simple changes and the equity starts gathering in one year, three years, five years, ten years.
I have a good comment for you: Now's the time to fix the next 10 years. Now, you may have to come to grips with reality and with truth; that's what was good for me when I met Mr. Shoaff, I was 25 years old, he was 44 years old. And he brought me a wealth of experience and he started asking me the tough questions. "Big question", he said, "Are you reading the books that are going to take you where you want to go in the next 5 years?"
Excellent question. See, you want to make sure. I would assume for all of you, to get to where you want to be in the next 5 years, you are either reading the right books or you're not. You're either engaged in the disciplines or you're not. But, here's what we don't want to engage in: disillusion. Hoping without acting. Wishing without doing.
The key is to take a look and say, "Where am I? What could I do to make the changes to make sure that I can take more certain daily steps toward the treasure I want, the mental treasure, the personal treasure, the spiritual treasure, the financial treasure? I don't want to make any more errors, now's the time to adjust my daily program to take me where I want to go."
In lecturing the last 39 years, I've gotten letters and personal testimonies of people that have done such remarkable things with just a few suggestions. And that is why seminars, tapes and books can be so valuable. Here's a key idea for us all to remember: We could all use a little coaching. When you're playing the game, it's sometimes hard to see it all.
But the key is to start right now making these changes to walk this new road. And here's what's exciting to me, just a few daily disciplines makes a great deal of difference in one year, three years, five years. And before you know it, you will be walking a brand new road.
To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

2. Vitamins for the Mind by Jim Rohn
Leadership/Management
The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.
We must learn to help those who deserve it, not just those who need it. Life responds to deserve not need.
My mentor said, "Let's go do it", not "You go do it". How powerful when someone says, "Let's!"
Good people are found not changed. Recently I read a headline that said, "We don't teach people to be nice. We simply hire nice people." Wow! What a clever short cut.
Managers help people see themselves as they are; Leaders help people to see themselves better than they are.
Learn to help people with more than just their jobs: help them with their lives.
Vitamins for the Mind is a weekly sampling of original quotes, on a specific topic, taken from The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn (TTOQ). TTOQ, a beautiful, burgundy hardbound book with gold foil lettering, is a collection of over 365 quotes on 60 topics gathered from Jim's personal journals, seminars and books spanning over 39 years. To order the TTOQ by Jim Rohn or Excerpts from TTOQ by Jim Rohn or Brian Tracy, please go to Jim Rohn's Online Catalog
3. Life Would Be Easy... If It Weren't for Communication Differences by Connie Podesta
Sometimes it seems that folks just don't get it. No matter what you say or how you say it, they simply don't have a clue - and don't seem too worried about getting one either! It's not their nature to understand; that's just how they "are." Maybe so, but more often than not, the problem is a result of a communication breakdown.
In this digitally inter-connected world, you'd think we could "fix" such basic differences. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as plugging another device into the system. Maybe they're the problem. Maybe you are. We all know difficult people - and, in fact, we can all be the difficult person.
A little background on communication styles can help us understand the issues and learn how to alter our approach to eventually make life a little easier for both parties.
The Basics
Every time we speak, we choose and use one of four basic communication styles: assertive, aggressive, passive and passive-aggressive.
Assertive Communication
The most effective and healthiest form of communication is the assertive style. It's how we naturally express ourselves when our self-esteem is intact, giving us the confidence to communicate without games and manipulation.
When we are being assertive, we work hard to create mutually satisfying solutions. We communicate our needs clearly and forthrightly. We care about the relationship and strive for a win/win situation. We know our limits and refuse to be pushed beyond them just because someone else wants or needs something from us. Surprisingly, assertive is the style most people use least.
Aggressive Communication
Aggressive communication always involves manipulation. We may attempt to make people do what we want by inducing guilt (hurt) or by using intimidation and control tactics (anger). Covert or overt, we simply want our needs met - and right now! Although there are a few arenas where aggressive behavior is called for (i.e., sports or war), it will never work in a relationship. Ironically, the more aggressive sports rely heavily on team members and rational coaching strategies.
Passive Communication
Passive communication is based on compliance and hopes to avoid confrontation at all costs. In this mode we don't talk much, question even less, and actually do very little. We just don't want to rock the boat. Passives have learned that it is safer not to react and better to disappear than to stand up and be noticed.
Passive-Aggressive Communication
A combination of styles, passive-aggressive avoids direct confrontation (passive), but attempts to get even through manipulation (aggressive). If you've ever thought about making that certain someone who needs to be "taught a thing or two" suffer (even just a teeny bit), you've stepped pretty close to (if not on into) the devious and sneaky world of the passive-aggressive.
So now what?
Clearly, for many reasons, the only healthy communication style is assertive communication. Surely you can identify many people in your own life that favor each of the four styles. Most of us use a combination of these four styles, depending on the person or situation. The styles we choose generally depend on what our past experiences have taught us will work best to get our needs met in each specific situation. If you take a really good look at yourself, you've probably used each throughout your lifetime.
Understanding the four basic types of communication will help you learn how to react most effectively when confronted with a difficult person. It will also help you recognize when you are using manipulative behavior to get your own needs met. Remember, you always have a choice as to which communication style you use. If you're serious about taking control of your life practice being more assertive. It will help you diffuse anger, reduce guilt and build relationships - both personally and professionally.
Take Action!
Begin to pay attention to which communication styles you use throughout the day. How often do you use a communication style other than assertive?
Watch and identify the communication styles some of the difficult people in your life use. Can you begin to notice how others use manipulative techniques to get their way?

My gosh, a live person sent this! Thank you. I should have expected nothing less from Jim. Many years ago I saw Jim when he came to the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. I brought my son who was 12 at the time and of course he thought his Dad was a goof for bringing him to that "motivational stuff." Well, maybe something rubbed off. Today he is 19 and a sophomore at Boston College. He is number one in his business school class of 495 students and last year ran the Boston Marathon for the first time. He has a real desire to excel. It has not always been this way but a spark went off in him. I think some of Jim's motivating talks and their impact on me helped me guide him. His mother still thinks all that motivational stuff is goofy but she has been a strong force in her own way. I recently gave my brother the 2001 CD set Jim did at the turn of the century and just ordered the 2004 set. I have a new broker who is working in my group and I am going to have him listen to the CDs on the drive back and forth to work. That is of course after I listen to them again!

My name is Unotida. I am 22 years old and I live in Zimbabwe (Africa). I am so excited to be on the One year Success plan. Jim Rohn International is a gift from God for me. I started listening to "The Challenge to succeed" which I got from friend in December 2006. I then subscribed for the free newsletter for a whole year in 2007. The newsletter alone changed my life and I can tell. As a young preacher and motivational speaker, I used to make small presentations using Jim Rohn's messages last year. My speaking ability has improved enormously. I'm climbing new mountains. Now, 2 months ago, I asked a friend of mine to pay for me for the 1 year program because I could not afford it from here. She did and boy am I enjoying it. I have set my goals for the next 10 years, and for my 1 year. The past month has just been incredible in terms of my flow of income, my happiness and my attitude towards life. This last Sunday, I preached at my church before young and old people, people that I respect in the community and are way bigger that me. My message was called "Awakening the Giant within you" from Mr. Tony's book. There I talked about "knowing who you are" and Goal setting. I have attached the short message that I preached on. You should have been there Mr. Rohn. It was massive. (Also see my plan for the year for accountability). Now, this year I am going to be speaking at my former high school before 800 students. The principal of that school has awarded me the opportunity to come and speak there 3 times this year. Because I appreciate what God has already done in my life, I want to inspire others to do the same. Jim Rohn's philosophies are going to be spread there. What a gift Mr. Rohn is to the world. I want you to know that you are making an impact in Zimbabwe through your messages. This nation is going through tough times with an inflation rate of more than 50 000%. However, I have made a decision that Africa and Zimbabwe will not stay the same because of the message that I got from you and your team. As long as I have breath in my lungs, I am committed to studying, practicing and teaching the lessons of financial freedom to my continent. We will get there soon. Thanks a lot.
