PERPETUITY
by William E Bailey

With callused feet
men walk this earth,
Of the pear shaped planet
that gave them birth,
...in fright.

Nebulous their origin,
unknown their fate.
Yet hurry, friends, hurry,
dare not be late,
...for what?

In search of knowledge,
in fear of night,
In a world of darkness
they live without light,
...poorly.

Where once we walked
with club and mace,
We now presume
to conquer space,
...what courage.

The burdens that man
seem destined to bear,
Have fattened his loins
and shorn his hair,
...how unsightly.

And yet the cycle
again completes,
And man against man
again competes,
...as always.

They say I am morbid
that I talk of fate.
But I tell you, my friends,
it is almost too late,
...almost midnight.

The immutable laws
which guide our lives,
With which we're afflicted
like the hives,
Are on our back,
a heavy load,
Or thrust to our soul,
a sharp goad,
...forward!

They drive us on,
as if by rote,
To the throbbing pulse
of an eternal note,
...onward.

What haven then
hath the soul to rest,
Or must it wait until
its among the blest,
...and dead.

And while it is a fact
that man must die,
And someday in
a shallow grave must lie,
It is not a shame
that it must be said,
Most men die
long before they are dead,
...while living.

"be more specific"
my critics cry,
"treat the lash,
not the eye",
...make easy.

Would they from
the loaf of life so whole,
Take one crumb from their beggars bowl,
...go hungry.

Yet sit not on your pedestal
and judge too harsh,
Your fellow creatures,
struggling in the marsh,
For if you will
but cup your ear,
The sounds of the marsh,
are very near,
...giving life.

Give them not pity
while you are observing,
For in all truth,
they are not deserving.
Be rather powerless,
like any true passion,
Give them instead
real compassion,
...of yourself.

And while you ladle
it out so free,
For all the world
to look and see,
Quick, friend, save a bit--
for me and thee.
