The Power of Positive Self-Direction
Written based on the teachings of Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn often shared a story that took him years to fully understand. When he was twenty-five years old, he was broke, confused, and headed nowhere in particular. Not because he lacked intelligence or opportunity, but because he had never taken the time to answer two simple questions: Who am I? And where do I want to go?
Those questions changed everything for him. And as Rohn believed, they can change everything for you too.
The Starting Point of All Achievement
Here's what Jim knew for certain — you cannot build a life of purpose and prosperity without first establishing a clear sense of direction. It's like trying to navigate a ship without a compass or a destination. You might stay busy, you might even work hard, but you'll drift with whatever current happens to catch you.
Self-direction begins with self-awareness. You must take an honest inventory of who you are today — your strengths, your weaknesses, your values, and yes, your fears. This isn't about judgment. It's about understanding your starting point.
As Jim often said, the same wind blows on us all — the wind of disaster, the wind of opportunity, the wind of change. The difference in our destinations is not the wind, but the set of the sail. And you cannot set your sail properly until you know both where you are and where you wish to arrive.
Your Personality Is Not Fixed
Now, here's something fascinating about human beings that Rohn believed many people never realize. Your personality, the very essence of who you seem to be, is not carved in stone. It is shaped daily by the direction you choose.
When you have no clear direction, your personality becomes reactive. You respond to whatever happens. You become a creature of circumstance rather than a creator of circumstance. Your moods depend on the news, on other people's opinions, on whether traffic was light or heavy that morning.
But when you establish positive self-direction, something remarkable happens. Your personality begins to transform. You develop confidence because you have a destination. You develop patience because you understand that worthy goals take time. You develop resilience because you know that setbacks are simply part of the journey, not the end of it.
Jim's mentor, Earl Shoaff, once told him something he never forgot. Shoaff said, "Jim, if you want to be wealthy and happy, learn this lesson well: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job." That was the beginning of Rohn's self-direction. That was the moment he stopped waiting for things to change and started changing himself.
The Five Major Pieces
Rohn taught that there are five major pieces of the life puzzle — the areas where self-direction must be applied.
First is philosophy — how you think, your view of life, your beliefs about what's possible. Second is attitude — how you feel, your emotional response to life's circumstances. Third is activity — what you do each day, your disciplines and habits. Fourth is results — what you're producing with your time and effort. And fifth is lifestyle — how you choose to live, what you do with what you have.
Here's what Jim found beautiful about self-direction: when you know who you are and where you want to go, you gain the power to work on all five pieces simultaneously. Your philosophy improves because you have something to believe in. Your attitude elevates because you have hope. Your activities become purposeful because they're connected to your destination.
Questions Worth Asking
Rohn often encouraged people to sit with a few important questions. Don't rush past them. Sit with them. Write about them. Discuss them with someone you trust.
What kind of person do you want to become? Not just what do you want to have, but who do you want to be?
If you continue on your current path, where will you arrive in five years? In ten years? Is that destination acceptable to you?
What would you need to change about your daily disciplines to become the person you've imagined?
The Decision That Changes Everything
Jim Rohn believed that self-direction is not about perfection. It's about intention. It's about waking up each morning with a sense of purpose rather than just a sense of obligation.
The power is already within you. The potential is already there. What's been missing, perhaps, is the direction.
As Rohn often said, we can have more than we've got because we can become more than we are. But becoming more requires a decision — a decision to stop drifting and start directing.
Make that decision today. Take out a piece of paper and begin writing about who you want to become. Describe your future self with clarity and detail. Then look at that vision daily, and let it pull you forward.
The seasons of life will continue to change. Opportunities will come and go. But with positive self-direction firmly established, you will have the power to make the most of whatever life brings your way.
And that, as Jim Rohn taught, is where true transformation begins.
