The Art of Communication

You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can't express it, it's not going to do you much good.

1. Have Something Good to Say

Preparation is the key. You can't speak what you don't know. You can't share what you don't feel.

  • Be a student: Read, observe, listen. Fill your well so you have something to draw from.
  • 2. Say It Well

This is the art of delivery. It's the vocabulary, the emotion, the timing.

  • Sincerity: The most important part of delivery. If you don't believe it, they won't believe it.
  • Brevity: Learn to say more with fewer words.
  • 3. Read Your Audience

You have to see who you are talking to.

  • Listen: Communication is two-way. You have to listen to understand the needs of your audience.
  • 4. Intensity

Words loaded with emotion have a powerful effect.

  • The miracle: When your words and your feelings match, you can move mountains.
  • "Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people." — Jim Rohn
