Influence & Mentorship

WEEKLY WISDOM
“The greatest gift you can give to somebody is your own personal development. I used to say, ‘If you will take care of me, I will take care of you.’ Now I say, ‘I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me.’”
— Jim Rohn
There’s a version of love that says, “I need you.” And there’s a version that says, “I’m becoming more—for you.” Jim understood the difference.
Early in his life, like so many of us, he leaned on others to fill the gaps. Fix me. Carry me. Take care of me. But somewhere along the way, he realized the equation had to change. The most generous thing he could do for the people he loved wasn’t to demand more from them—it was to demand more from himself.
That shift—from “take care of me” to “I’ll take care of me for you”—is one of the most profound changes a person can make. It transforms every relationship. The parent who works on their patience. The friend who develops their listening. The leader who sharpens their vision. These aren’t selfish acts. They’re the most generous acts there are.
Right Now
This Sunday is Father’s Day—a day that invites us to think about the people who shaped us. But Jim would remind us that influence isn’t just something we receive. It’s something we give, every day, whether we intend to or not. Your children, your friends, your colleagues—they’re not just watching what you say. They’re watching who you’re becoming. This week might be a good time to ask yourself: what is my personal development giving to the people around me?
A Story
The Mentor Who Changed Everything
When Jim Rohn was twenty-five, he was broke, behind on his promises, and running out of excuses. Then a friend invited him to hear a man named Earl Shoaff speak. That single evening changed the trajectory of Jim’s entire life. Shoaff didn’t give Jim a business plan or a loan—he gave him a new way of seeing himself. He told Jim, “If you will change, everything will change for you.” Over the next five years, Jim went from making $57 a week to building a fortune. He always credited Shoaff’s mentorship as the turning point—not because Shoaff did the work for him, but because Shoaff was living proof that ordinary people could do extraordinary things. That’s the real gift of a mentor: not answers, but a higher standard to reach for.
This week, consider: who are you becoming for the people who look up to you?
Write down one area of your personal development—patience, knowledge, health, emotional maturity—that would be a gift to someone you love. Then take one small step in that direction before the week is over.
Your growth is never just about you.
