WEEKLY WISDOM
“Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If you work hard on your job, you can make a living, which is noble. If you work hard on yourself, you could make a fortune, which is exciting.”
— Jim Rohn
Most people spend eight hours a day working on someone else's dream. They work hard — I'm not questioning that. They show up, put in the hours, do what's asked of them. And that's admirable. But here's what I learned from my mentor, Earl Shoaff: the money you earn at work is a reflection of the value you bring. And the value you bring is a reflection of who you've become.
So the question isn't really about working harder at the office. It's about working harder on yourself — your mind, your skills, your attitude, your philosophy. Because when you grow, your value grows. And when your value grows, your income has no choice but to follow.
I spent six years after meeting Mr. Shoaff doing exactly that. I read the books. I attended the seminars. I studied successful people. Not because someone made me — because I finally understood that what I would become was far more important than what I would get. The getting is a byproduct. The becoming is everything.
Right Now
We're at the midpoint of the year. Six months behind you, six months ahead. This is the perfect moment to ask yourself: what have I invested in my own growth since January? Not what I've earned — what I've become. If the answer isn't satisfying, the good news is that summer is the season of growth. There's still time to plant.
A Story
Work Harder on Yourself
Early in their mentorship, Earl Shoaff gave Jim a piece of advice that changed the trajectory of his life. He said, "Jim, if you work hard on your job, you can make a living. But if you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune." Jim took those words seriously. Over the next six years, he didn't just change what he did — he changed who he was. He read voraciously, studied philosophy, attended every seminar he could find. The result wasn't just financial success. It was a complete transformation of his character, his confidence, and his capacity to contribute. Jim would later say that the fortune he made was small compared to what he became in the process of earning it.
This week, take 15 minutes with your journal and answer these four questions:
-
What am I becoming?
-
What book have I read in the last 30 days?
-
What skill am I actively developing right now?
-
If my income reflects my personal development, what does it tell me?
“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”
