The Promises You Keep to Yourself

The Promises You Keep to Yourself

Let me ask you something, my friend. How many promises have you made to yourself this year?

I'm not talking about the promises you make to your boss, your spouse, your clients. Those matter. But they're not the ones that shape your character.

The promises that define who you are — really are — are the ones nobody else knows about.

The Agreement Nobody Witnesses

You said you'd get up early. Did you?

You said you'd read for thirty minutes. Did you?

You said you'd stop making excuses. Have you?

Here's what I've learned: every promise you keep to yourself deposits something into your character account. And every promise you break makes a small withdrawal. The problem is, most people don't notice the withdrawals. They're small. A skipped workout here. A postponed goal there. An "I'll start Monday" that turns into another month of nothing.

But the account knows. You know.

A man once told me, "Jim, I just don't trust myself to follow through anymore." And I said, "That's because you've broken too many agreements with yourself. You wouldn't trust a business partner who did that either."

Rebuilding the Account

Now here's the good news. You can rebuild self-trust the same way you build trust with anyone else — one kept promise at a time.

Start small. Don't promise yourself you'll run a marathon next month. Promise yourself you'll walk for twenty minutes tomorrow morning. Then do it. Promise yourself you'll write one page. Then write it. Promise yourself you'll have that difficult conversation this week. Then have it.

Each small follow-through tells you something about who you're becoming. And after enough of them, you start to believe yourself again.

I used to say, "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment." But let me add to that. Discipline is really just the habit of keeping promises to yourself. That's all it is.

The Person in the Mirror

At the end of the day, there's only one person you absolutely cannot fool. The person looking back at you in the mirror.

You can impress everyone else. You can say the right things in meetings. You can say all the right things at the banquet. But if you know — deep down — that you haven't been keeping your word to yourself, it shows. Maybe not today. But it shows.

And the reverse is true too. When you know you've done what you said you'd do, there's a quiet confidence that comes with that. Not arrogance. Confidence. The kind that doesn't need to announce itself.

So here's my challenge. Pick one promise. Just one. Something you've been telling yourself you'd do. And keep it this week. Not because anyone is watching. Because you are.

That's where character lives, my friend. In the promises nobody sees you keep.
