The Small Tests That Reveal Everything

My friend, let me tell you something most people get wrong about character.

They think character is tested in the big moments. The crisis. The public failure. The moment everyone is watching. And yes, those moments matter. But by the time those moments arrive, the test is already over. You already passed or failed — you just didn't know it yet.

Character is tested in the small things. Every single day.

The Ordinary Moments

Do you return the shopping cart or leave it in the parking lot?

Do you tell the cashier when they give you too much change?

Do you do your best work on Tuesday afternoon when nobody's checking, or only when the deadline is tomorrow and the boss is watching?

These aren't dramatic questions. Nobody writes books about returning shopping carts. But I'm telling you — these small decisions are where your character lives.

A friend of mine used to hire people based on one test. He'd take them to lunch and watch how they treated the waiter. Not how they treated him — the interviewer, the person with the power. How they treated someone who couldn't do anything for them.

He told me, "Jim, I've never been wrong. The ones who were rude to the waiter were always problems later."

Why Small Things Become Big Things

Here's the principle. How you do anything is how you do everything.

The person who cuts corners on small tasks will cut corners on big ones. The person who's honest about small things will be honest when the stakes are high. The person who shows up on time for a meeting they don't care about will show up on time for the ones that matter.

It works the other direction too. Small compromises lead to bigger ones. You tell one small lie and it's easier to tell a bigger one next time. You skip one commitment and skipping becomes a habit. Not overnight — that's what makes it dangerous. It happens so gradually you don't notice until you look up one day and wonder how you got here.

I've said it many times: success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day. And failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day. The same is true for character.

The Test You're Taking Right Now

Here's what I want you to consider. You're being tested right now. Not in some future moment of crisis. Right now, today, in the ordinary decisions you'll make before dinner.

Will you follow through on what you said you'd do?

Will you speak honestly even when it's easier not to?

Will you do your best work even when no one will notice?

These are the small tests. And they reveal everything.

Because the truth is, my friend, there are no small decisions when it comes to character. Every choice either builds it or chips away at it. There's no neutral ground.

The good news? That means every ordinary Tuesday is an opportunity. Not just to get through the day, but to become the person you want to be.

One small test at a time.
