WEEKLY WISDOM
“Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.”
— Jim Rohn
My friend, I've spent a lifetime studying what makes communication work. I've watched brilliant people fail to connect and simple people move mountains with their words. And here's what I discovered: it's rarely about having the perfect script.
You see, we get so worried about saying the right thing. We rehearse. We edit ourselves. We hold back because we think we need more knowledge, more credentials, more polish. But here's what I know—people don't remember your perfect sentences. They remember how you made them feel. They remember whether you meant it.
Think about the most powerful words ever spoken to you. Maybe it was a teacher who believed in you. Maybe it was a parent who said they were proud. Were those words eloquent? Probably not. But they were felt. The person speaking knew what they knew, and more importantly, they felt deeply about what they knew. That's what reached you.
So here's the question: Are you holding back because you're waiting to know more? Or are you ready to speak from what you already know and feel? The world doesn't need more perfect speakers. It needs more authentic ones.
Right Now
This weekend, millions of us will try to put into words what our mothers mean to us. And here's what I want you to remember: your mother doesn't need poetry. She doesn't need a Hallmark card written by a stranger. She needs you—your voice, your heart, your truth. Whatever words you choose, let them come from that 80%. Let her feel what you feel.
A Story
The Day I Started Reading
Mr. Shoaff asked me how many books I'd read in the last 90 days. I said none. He replied: "No wonder you're broke." That stung. But then he said something I'll never forget: "Reading is essential. Not to be more impressive to others, but to be more valuable to yourself."
You see, Mr. Shoaff didn't lecture me with fancy language. He just said what he knew, and he felt it deeply enough to tell me the truth. That's communication that changes lives.
This week, I have a simple challenge for you: Think of one person who needs to hear something you've been holding back. Maybe it's gratitude. Maybe it's encouragement. Maybe it's "I believe in you." Don't wait until you have the perfect words. Just speak from what you know and feel—and let that be enough.
